Star Party at Shangri La

Saturday, April 28, 2012
7:30 p.m.  - 10:00 p.m.

The Astronomical Society of Southeast Texas (ASSET) will be at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center for a Star Party from 7:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012. ASSET is a friendly group of amateur astronomers from Jefferson, Hardin, Jasper, Newton and Orange counties. Members will be on hand with telescopes through which visitors can enjoy the night sky. This event is free to the public and children accompanied by an adult are welcome.

Howard Minor of ASSET says, "There will be many readily visible objects that are in a good position this time of year for viewing. ASSET members will be on hand to assist visitors in seeing Venus, Jupiter and the Moon as well as several deep space bodies such as double stars, open star clusters and the Orion Nebula."

In addition to the numerous telescopes visitors will have the opportunity to see the night sky through, there will be a "star hopping activity" where visitors will be  taught how to find objects in the winter night sky. Using a moderately high powered laser, guide stars will be pointed out and visitors will learn how to find out celestial bodies using these stars.
