Other Earth Week Activities
Join Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to kick-off the Earth Week Celebration at Eco-Fest. Eco-Fest is an educational family event designed to combine learning and fun for children of all ages. It begins a week of activities, programs and informational talks regarding the environment and earth-friendly practices that wraps up with a Butterfly Release on Earth Day, April 22 at 2:00 p.m.
For children, the day will be filled with activities, including face painting, planting in the Children’s Garden, telling the time by becoming a human sundial, building a small terrarium and a mobile made from sticks and stones. There will be an egret ring toss and a scavenger hunt for earth-friendly prizes they can take home. Children will also be able to make people out of a potted plant. After drawing a face on a small pot, grass seeds will be planted in the pot for children to take home as a souvenir, and kids can watch the seeds grow into “hair”. To commemorate the day and the kick-off of Earth Week, children from local school choirs will sing earth-friendly songs during Eco-Fest.
For adults (and children of all ages), information booths set-up by “green” organizations and companies will provide information on earth-friendly products, services and opportunities. Bright Star Solutions will have information on solar products and installations. San Jacinto Environmental Supplies will give away samples of organic fertilizers. The Barking Dog Café will provide samples of organic, fair-trade coffee. The Texas Hike and Bike Coalition will have a variety of bikes on display and information on bike trails in the area. Local automobile dealers will feature the latest in the fuel efficient and electric car designs being offered. There will be many more organizations represented, with information on how to be more earth-friendly in daily activities.
