Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center will host a weeklong display of bonsai trees during the upcoming Bonsai Festival. Bonsai trees will be on display May 21 through May 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Tree Ring Plaza in Shangri La. In addition, there will be a beginner skill level bonsai lecture at 10:00 a.m. followed by an intermediate skill level bonsai class at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 21. At the Bonsai Festival, visitors will be able to view many different bonsai trees on display throughout the week, including junipers, pines, Brazilian rain tree, cypress, maples and others. The bonsai trees on display will be from local bonsai groups, including the Lake Charles Bonsai Society and the Southeast Texas Bonsai Society, which will also be on-hand May 21 to answer questions about the trees and the art of bonsai.

The class and lecture will be lead by Yvonne Padilla from the Corpus Christi Bonsai Club. At 10:00 a.m., a lecture and demonstration for beginners interested in bonsai will be held. At 2:00 p.m. the Intermediate Bonsai Class for those already involved in bonsai wanting to learn more advanced techniques will take place. Participants interested in the intermediate class must bring their own bonsai tree. Reservations are required; call 409.670.9799 to RSVP.
