Take a Child Outside Week

September 24, 2010

September 24-30

Shangri La is excited to participate in the national initiative known as Take a Child Outside Week. (Click here for complete schedule)

Inspired by Richard Louv's book, The Last Child in the Woods, this initiative encourages everyone to overcome the barriers that prevent children from exploring and experiencing the world around them.

At Shangri La, our goal is to show parents and others some outdoor activities that they can do with their children.  We also strive to instill a sense of wonder in all of the children that come to Shangri La during this week of fun-tastic events.

We invite you to bring your children to Shangri La from September 24 - 30 and participate in Take a Child Outside Week activities.

September 24 - What’s Out There? Questions for Exploration
Observe your natural surroundings and take a walk through Shangri La! As you explore, ask your child questions that are very general, reminding yourself and your child that there are no right or wrong answers. Ask questions that do not require background information or prior knowledge, but are based on what your child is experiencing at the moment.

On your paper write down what you have seen and what more you want to find out later. If you don’t know what you have found, take a picture with your own digital camera if possible and ask someone at Shangri La if they could identify your findings.

Detailed instructions and materials will be at the welcome table for this activity (this table is located right past the admission office window).
