Take a Child Outside Week
September 24-30
Shangri La is excited to participate in the national initiative known as Take a Child Outside Week.
Inspired by Richard Louv's book, The Last Child in the Woods, this initiative encourages everyone to overcome the barriers that prevent children from exploring and experiencing the world around them.
At Shangri La, our goal is to show parents and others some outdoor activities that they can do with their children. We also strive to instill a sense of wonder in all of the children that come to Shangri La during this week of fun-tastic events.
We invite you to bring your children to Shangri La from September 24 - 30 and participate in Take a Child Outside Week activities.
September 29 - Trees and Leaves
Walk around and discover tree life at Shangri La! How many trees do you see? Are they all the same? What is different about them? Compare the leaves, bark, flowers, buds — everything you notice. Collect the different leaves you find or take pictures. Use a field guide to identify the trees. Can you identify them by leaves, bark and twigs? If you’re having troubles identifying the trees ask someone at Shangri La.
Detailed instructions and materials will be at the welcome table for this activity (this table is located right past the admission office window).
