Take a Child Outside Week
September 24-30
Shangri La is excited to participate in the national initiative known as Take a Child Outside Week.
Inspired by Richard Louv's book, The Last Child in the Woods, this initiative encourages everyone to overcome the barriers that prevent children from exploring and experiencing the world around them.
At Shangri La, our goal is to show parents and others some outdoor activities that they can do with their children. We also strive to instill a sense of wonder in all of the children that come to Shangri La during this week of fun-tastic events.
We invite you to bring your children to Shangri La from September 24 - 30 and participate in Take a Child Outside Week activities.
September 26 - Shapes and Colors and Textures, Oh My!
Discover the art of nature! Pick up a bag of color chips and texture materials and challenge your child to walk through the children’s garden and find colors or shapes or textures in nature that match each of the items. They can record their findings on the paper with words or pictures. You can use your own digital camera to document the findings. Once you are finished in the children’s garden, take a walk to another location at Shangri La and repeat the activity to see what is different. Is it harder or easier to find certain colors, shapes, or textures?
Detailed instructions and materials will be at the welcome table for each activity (this table is located right past the admission office window).
