Black Bears in Texas

September 15, 2009

Black bears are the focus of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center's September 15, 2009 Beat the Heat presentation series.  Rickey Maxey of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will lead the discussion, titled Black Bears in Texas, on Tuesday, September 15 at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.  To allow for more people to attend the presentation, two separate presentations will be made.  Both presentation are exactly alike and will be held in Shangri La at the Discovery Theater.  Both presentations require an RSVP at 409.670.9799.  Seating is limited; we urge those who want to enjoy this program to phone early.

In the 1880s, black bears were found throughout east Texas; however, they became nearly extinct due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure.  Conservation efforts have helped save this species, and bears are once again being spotted in east Texas and western Louisiana.  In his presentation, Maxey will discuss the species and their condition in the area today.  He will also provide handouts and forms for helping in this important projects along with some interesting hands-on models.

This event is free and open to the public; however, an RSVP is required to attend. Visitors should reserve a seat by calling 409.670.9799.
