The Wild Wednesday Program is a series of educational programs offered during the summer. These programs run every Wednesday, from 9:30 am – 10:30 am, June through mid-August.

2011 Wild Wednesdays Program Schedule
June 8, 2011 – Re-Use That Paper!
Too many old magazines lying around the house? Come learn nifty and thrifty ways for reusing and reducing paper! With a fold here and some cutting there, we can create gift boxes, bows, jewelry and wall art! All family members can join the fun and take home ideas to reuse that paper!
June 15, 2011 – Owl Puke
Meet Maxine, our rehabilitated owl! Maxine is a Barred Owl that came to live at Shangri La after an accident that left her with one wing. During this family program, you will learn Maxine’s story and hear about Barred Owl adaptations. Then participants will explore the food chain of an owl by dissecting owl pellets.
June 22, 2011 – Butterfly Gardening
Turn your garden into a butterfly buffet by growing the right nectar and food plants for butterflies and caterpillars. This adult-oriented program will begin with a 15 minute presentation in our Discovery Theater, and end with quality time in our Children’s Garden.
June 29, 2011 – Animal Adventures on the Bayou
Wildlife surrounds us at Shangri La! Join us for a special Outpost Tour that will travel down the bayou in search of the unique wildlife that lives there. Space is limited so sign up soon for this fun filled adventure with your whole family.
July 6, 2011 – Foraging for Frogs
All family members will enjoy this “friendly frog fun-anza”! We will catch and release tadpoles, learn about the frog life cycle, and make our own scientific journals.
July 13, 2011 – Hide-N-Seek
Birds are always hiding in the trees around Shangri La and even in your yard at home. It is time to seek them out! Learn about why so many birds nest at Shangri La, and how to make your yard an attractive place for birds to visit. Fun for all ages.
July 20, 2011 – Sensing Nature
Come experience Shangri La in a whole new way! We will use all five senses as we explore some of the back paths of Shangri La. The whole family will enjoy this multi-sensory walk. Come tune-in to the quiet sounds, interesting smells and exhilarating sights of nature.
July 27, 2011 – Who Polluted the River?
In this hands on adventure, kids of all ages will want to come and see who has been polluting the Sabine River. Participants will take part in an interactive story, test water samples, and collect critters. Then we’ll explore some ways you can “be kind to our world.”
August 3, 2011 – Snakes Demystified
Snakes are commonly misunderstood. Join us as we discuss snake habits and lifestyles, and identify differences between venomous and non-venomous snakes. Live, captive snakes will be present! This program is designed for children 13 and older.
August 10, 2011 – Garden Spa
Take some time for yourself and relax at our natural spa. Experience a fruit facial, softening foot bath and much more as we use ingredients found in your home and garden. The whole family will want to relax, sit back and enjoy!
