Orchid Festival
Twenty percent of all identified plant species are in the orchid family, which produces some of the most beautiful flowers in the world. Because Lutcher Stark was so appreciative of orchids and was influential among the region’s orchid societies, Shangri La will host an annual Orchid Festival the first Saturday of November. Enlisting the support of regional orchid societies as well as those interested in native species, this festival will highlight the beauty and variety of orchids, both native and non-native.
Shangri La’s exhibition greenhouses will be used to showcase orchids from all sources. An Orchid Walk will allow visitors the opportunity to walk through the remote wetland areas of Shangri La and collect a census of the rare and sweet-smelling Fragrant Ladies Tresses Orchid. Shangri La will also provide speakers and other presenters to enlighten the public on the orchid family.
