Outreach Programs

Owl Puke

Meet Maxine, our rehabilitated owl!  Maxine is a barred owl that came to live at Shangri La after an accident that left her with one wing.  Two Shangri La representatives will come to your classroom to tell her story and demonstrate amazing owl adaptations.  After the live animal presentation, you students will dissect owl pellets - one pellet per student.  This program is approximately one hour in length.

For the protection and comfort of Maxine, we present this program to individual classrooms only.  Classrooms must be within a 50 mile radius of Shangri La.

STARLAB
The STARLAB is a portable planetarium capable of holding up to 28 students.  Inside, a projector will show the night sky devoid of light pollutants.  In addition to teaching about constellations, planets, moon phases, and mythology, teachers can also engage in cross-curriculum teaching using cylinders on continental drift, geography, and the human cell.  This resource is available for teachers and students grades 1 through 12.

Teachers must be certified to use this equipment.  Each year, Shangri La sponsors workshops to allow teachers to develop expertise to use this resource in their classroom.  Please check our Teacher Workshops for the upcoming program.
