Outreach Programs

Owl Puke

Grades K through 8
Meet Maxine, our rehabilitated owl!  Maxine is a Barred Owl that came to live at Shangri La after an accident left her with one wing.  Two Shangri La representatives will come to your classroom to tell her story and demonstrate amazing owl adaptations.
. Grades K-2 will receive a live animal show-and-tell presentation. This show-and-tell presentation is approximately 20 minutes.

. Grades 3-8 will receive the live animal presentation AND they will dissect owl pellets. This program is approximately 1 hour in length.

For Maxine’s protection and comfort, we present this program to individual classrooms only. Schools must be within a 50-mile radius of Shangri La.

STARLAB

Grades 1 through 12
The STARLAB is a portable planetarium that seats up to 28 students. Inside, a projector shows the night sky devoid of light pollutants.  In addition to teaching about constellations, planets, moon phases, and mythology, teachers can also engage in cross-curricular teaching    using cylinders on continental drift, geography, and the human cell. Each year, Shangri La sponsors workshops to allow teachers to     develop the expertise to use this resource in their classroom. After the training, teachers are certified to use the STARLAB at their school, free of charge.
