Dedication of Children's Garden in Shangri La

Dedication Includes Activities for Children

 
ORANGE, Texas, September 10, 2009 - Studies show that children exposed to the natural world have a greater chance at thriving as they mature. In celebration of children and the wonders of nature, the Shangri La Children's Garden offers up a place of natural exploration for all ages. At the dedication taking place Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 AM, attending children will take an active role in cutting the ribbon marking the grand opening of the Children's Garden at Shangri La.

In keeping with the spirit of the event, Molly Dannenmaier, author of "A Child's Garden: 60 Ideas to Make Any Garden Come Alive for Children", will present a 15-minute talk on the importance of children exploring the outdoors. The author will discuss what items yards should incorporate in order to create valuable sensory experiences--from seed pods for collecting to fishing in ditches, and blossoms to pick and trees to climb. The talk will also present ideas for parents to incorporate at home in order to feed young minds in ways that learning indoors can not.

"A Child's Garden" will be on sale in the garden store, and Dannenmaier will be available for signing at the event.

Shangri La is located at 2111 West Park Avenue, Orange, Texas. The Shangri La Visitor Parking area, located across West Park Ave. from Shangri La, will be open and available to Shangri La visitors free of charge. A restricted access parking lot for vehicles with proper handicap designation is located just inside the vehicular entrance gate of Shangri La.

Nestled within 252 acres in the heart of Orange, Texas, Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is a program of the Nelda C. and H.J. Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center is the first project in Texas and the 50th project in the world to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum Certification for LEED®-NC, which verifies that the design and construction of Shangri La reached the highest green building and performance measures.  Shangri La was also named by the American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment as one of the top 10 green projects throughout the world.
 
Shangri La offers a glimpse of how people can live in harmony with nature, as it strives in its mission to Mentor Children of All Ages to Be Kind to Their World.
